Skills

Resources

  • Cards representing the vocabulary (a book, an eraser, a pencil, marker, glue, paint, paper, scissors, a backpack)
  • Real classroom objects.
  • Tape
  • Cards prepared by students.

Previous Activities

  • Prepare the cards.
  • Cut a cardboard into 9 pieces of 15 cm x 20 cm
  • You can draw or paste pictures of classroom objects on them.
  • Put some tape at the back of each card.

Development

First step

  • Show the cards you prepared once at a time
  • Say the word twice.
  • Have students repeat several times.
  • Present the cards in random order.
  • Ask them to repeat and add one more card e.g. book, book and eraser, book and eraser and pencil, and so on. (15 minutes)

Second step

  • Hold up one card at a time and say "I have a (book)".
  • Have students repeat "I have a (book)", do the same with the other cards.
  • Ask the students to put on their desks real classroom objects.
  • Have students hold up a book and ask "What do you have"?
  • Prompt them to answer "I have a book".
  • Repeat the procedure with each card
  • Practice individually.
  • Review the last class.
  • Present the cards and ask individually "What do you have"?
  • Have students ask and answer themselves (15 minutes).
  • Have students practice in pairs with their own cards (you should have asked them to prepare the cards the day before)
  • Monitor the class and offer help as necessary.
  • Ask for a volunteer.
  • Give him/her a bag with some classroom objects.
  • Ask "Do you have any (book)"?
  • The student shows the object and says Yes, I do or No I don't if he/she doesn't have it.
  • Call another volunteer and repeat the procedure.
  • Have them practice in pairs.
  • Monitor meanwhile they practice and correct any mistake. (30 minutes)

Tasks

  • Ask students to prepare their own sets of cards.
  • Ask students make a picture dictionary with vocabulary words (picture and word).
  • Give students a paper with the drawings of each classroom object to label them.
  • Send a paper with the classroom objects drawn. The first one already done as an example e.g. "What do you have"? "I have a (book)"
  • Send a paper with the classroom objects drawn. Some of them must be with an X and others with a. Give an example with the question "Do you have any book? X" "No, I don't"

Timing

Estimated time is two class hours of 45 minutes each one.

Evaluation

  • Match pictures with the correct names.
  • Answer to the question "What do you have"? in an appropriate way.
  • Answer with Yes, I do or No, I don't according to the pictures.

Extension

  • Once students can manage this kind of exercise with the objects you presented at first, you can extend this theme with another classroom objects such as desk, colored pencils, etc.
  • Another way to extend this theme is practicing all activities done but with house objects.
